NASHVILLE - Paraphrasing the great football Coach Red Sanders, when it comes to presidential contests, "Presentation isn't everything, it's the ONLY thing," according to Speech Coach Jeanette Henderson. And according to them, the best presentation at the Fox News Republican Debate in New Hampshire Thursday night was Rudy Giuliani, followed by Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, respectively.
She and her husband Roy, co-founders of Podium Master, an internationally-recognized presentation consulting firm, and co-authors of the best-selling book There's No Such Thing as Public Speaking (Penguin), have been following the candidates in both parties since the beginning of the debate season, and have been issuing Report Cards on their progress, and last night's Fox News Republican Debate in New Hampshire was no exception. Here are the complete results of their presentation evaluations for that event:
#1 Rudy Giuliani 82 % (Best Score of any Presidential Candidate so far)
#2 Mike Huckabee 73 %
#3 Mitt Romney 61 %
#4 Tom Tancredo 53 %
#5 Duncan Hunter 50 %
#6 John McCain 48 %
#7 Sam Brownback 42 %
#8 Ron Paul 41 %
Scores are based on twenty criteria in five different groups, including content, physicalization and vocalization. In addition, extra points can added or subtracted for things such as whether the presenter achieved what was necessary for the occasion, an excessive use of "pause-fillers" like ums and ya-knows, and when the presenter begins too many subjects with the word "I," which makes them appear too self-centered rather than audience-centered, a significant detraction.
